Northern Knights brave the cold and wind to fly in the 2002 frozen thumb fly.

Jan 1, 2002…………….Well here we are the beginning of a new year once again!  Well today was 23 degrees F, wind mostly from the west blowing 5-10mph, bright sunny day.  All in all, not a bad flying day, if you were dressed for it.  The Northern Knights passed out 29 certificates to pilots who braved the cold to put a plane into the big sky!

As usual the shelter was wrapped in plastic to keep out the wind and cold.  There was always a couple of propane heaters inside helping to warm up the flyers.  Jim Stocker furnished his yearly chili which every one partook.  WR Crane supplied a dump cake and Pete Whitteck supplied plates of cookies.  There was also assorted thermos’s of coffee and hot chocolate.

WR Crane flew the first control line flight of the year on the new control line circle.  Dale Beck and Gary Himes have the honors (??????) of having the first midair of the year.  Unfortunately neither plane survived………..Charlie Schroeder and Rick Ellis couldn’t stand it so they had the second midair of the year.  Charlie managed to get his back to the runway while Rick’s was another total loss as Charlie chewed the tail feathers off Ricks plane.  Other than stated above, the day was carnage free.

The following is a list of all who received certificates today. (In no particular order)
